I Used To Be, But Now
by Lidia Temores
I was a star in the sky
shining up the night
like a woman's smile
in a room of frowns.
I was the brightest star of all
people looked up at me
They said I was pretty as a diamond;
They asked for wishes
and I made them come true.
But now I'm a rock on earth;
now people look down at me
step on me
ignore me
like another day on a calendar.
I am part of the lonely streets
of my hood,
kicked around by others
or worse...
or worse.
I once was something
but now
I'm nothing.
